ABOUT
30+ years in design.
From Japan, a question for the world:
What is design
in the age of AI?
I was trained in design before the internet existed.
I've worked across print, product, identity, digital, and everything in between.
I've built brands, led teams, taught thousands of students, and sat at many tables
where crucial decisions had to be made.
AI can now generate ideas, layouts, and even strategies in seconds.
But generating possibilities is not the same as choosing what matters.
To me,
design begins with that choice—
in the space of judgment.
This is not about trends or tools.
It is about finding a compass for anyone who wants to create with intention
in an age of endless options.
After more than thirty years in design and twenty years teaching the next generation,
I realized that the most valuable thing I could pass on was not a technique,
but a way of choosing.
The question that still guides me is:
How do we choose
in the age of AI?
30+ years.
Hundreds of brands.
Thousands of decisions.
Still navigating.
Experience doesn't give you all the answers.
Experience gives perspective.
Judgment gives direction.
It teaches you what matters when you have to choose.
That is where design begins.

WHY I WROTE
DESIGN COMPASS
For more than thirty years, I have worked in design—as an art director,
brand designer, educator, and mentor.
The tools changed.
The possibilities multiplied.
Then AI changed the question itself.
Answers are now abundant.
What matters is knowing what to choose.
That is why I wrote DESIGN COMPASS.
Not to provide another set of answers, but to offer a way of thinking
when answers are everywhere.
